Bharucha, Ruzbeh Nari: Shadows in Cages. Hamalayan Press, 2006. This sobering book tells the stories of mothers in India's prisons who, along with their very young children exist in the most dismal conditions. The conditions in these prisons are abominable; filthy, overcrowded, and stiflingly hot. Violence and corruption abound. But it is not without sparks of hope. The author's coverage of Tihar's jail reforms, complete with a well-run nursery provides a heartwarming model that can be the solution to these problems. (government, education, health)
